South American birding sites

South America is one of the best places in the world for birding, but is a challenge for us to get to.  We have had one great birding trip in Peru so far which we did with North Peru bird tours.  The tour included staying at Gocta Lodge near Gocta Falls, the second or third highest waterfall in the world.

Tarapoto, North Peru

We had a great birding trip in North Peru with North Peru Birding Tours starting and ending at Tarapoto.  We got over 400 species on our four week trip (other tours have seen totals around 500 species) including the Long-whiskered Owlet at Abra Patricia, the Oilbird, and many hummingbirds including the Marvellous Spatuletail.  Cruising the Amazon River from Pumarinri Lodge is a great way to see birds, but there is also great birding on many of the farm tracks around the Tarapoto area.

Abra Patricia, North Peru

Abra Patricia is a conservancy area in North Peru with a birding lodge.  It is a good spot for Hummingbirds, the Long-whiskered Owlet, and has a viewing platform to observe the forest birds from the canopy.
