Probably a recent release, but this pair of partridges were truly feral. There are small feral populations around NZ, but these birds are pretty scarce.
Unlike Australia, these introduced birds are pretty rare in New Zealand, typically found in the Matakana – Orewa region. This bird was at Wainui near Orewa.

Despite being quite common across New Zealand in summer, these pretty little birds are hard to see and photograph. I got good views of this one which was with two other Shining Cuckoos in Belmont Regional park (Stratton Street entrance) one summer.


Originally a vagrant to NZ, these cosmopolitan birds have been seen annually in small numbers, and in 2015 a pair definitely bred in the Wairau lagoon area. Also seen in Travis wetlands in Christchurch and the Foxton river mouth.
